'Fragile' Marks the Debut of Orson Welling

Thu April 13th 2006 @ 10:22PM - James - Tom Welling - 17 Comments

Forgive me, for my I know not what I do; even though it was on purpose. Still, I couldn't help it, the surnames were too similar to miss this opportunity for absurdity! I promise I'll stick to calling him Tom (not Orson) Welling from now on. Though if Tom has even half the directing skill of Orson Welles, I'll be very happy.

It almost goes without saying that tonight's episode of Smallville, entitled 'Fragile', marks Tom Welling's debut as a director: as such the episode has been very highly anticipated by both fans and non-fans alike. On a personal level, I'm really looking forward to watching it, and on this occasion especially I would love to know what everyone thought.

Tomorrow I'll be posting up screen caps, just as I always do – they may be a little later than usual – and this time I may even make an exception by offering up a review of the episode.

I wouldn't expect too much. Not because I have any doubts about Tom's skills, but because series directors have to follow certain rules so that the episodes fit in well with one another. So I guess directors are not expected to leave too many individual marks on their own show. I bet the producers consider an episode well directed when one can´t really tell who directed the episode! So I hope that in the future Tom will be able to direct a movie, so that he can do what he wants. But let's see whether we can detect marks of a personal style ...

All in all the episode was very good, with a nice little plot line that could be easily wrapped up within an hour. Tom's directing was great, but what I noticed most was his acting in this episode. I think he portayed the "big brother" very well. He showed a lighter and softer side. Kudos Tom.

I just watched 'Fragile' and I must say I was impressed. Tom Welling did a great job for his first try behind the camera, and I realy I hope he gets the chance to direct future episodes of Smallville. Tom's interaction with the girl, Maddie, was especially great. He was a like a father-figure, which was touching; Jonathan Kent would have been proud! Tom always seems to have a knack for working with kids.

Overall I enjoyed the episode. I was surprised that the episode was centered around Clark, since Tom was the one directing it. Clark showed signs of maturity which is very refreshing and welcomed. Hopefully this trend will continue.

I loved this episode, James. Tom did a wonderful job and it was beautifully shot. I loved the framing, and the pace was taut and kept me on the edge of my seat. It was a very nice story too.

Tom also got some wonderful scenes out of the guest actress who played Maddie. He produced a terrific episode!

I think Tom is a great director; he's so serious and so organized with what he does. Even better, there's a fun side to him too, which is a great combination.

I have to say, I was so afraid that Tom would do a terrible job, but he amazed me. He was an exceptional director and I loved the episode. Congratulations Tom!

I thought the episode was great.

I think Tom did a wonderful job. The episode really looked good, and what was a fairly low-key story with little in the way of super-stuff turned out to be a very sweet and revealing look at Clark's maturity and humanity. The Lex/Lana/Chloe scenes were brief, but fascinating.

I'm really proud of the guy.

Tom was in just about every scene of this episode, which surprised me. It was beautifully shot, and it was nice to see Clark as the hero throughout. Overall, it was a thoroughly enjoyable episode!

This episode was mediocre, although Tom did a good job. I did like the scene in the barn, with the glass shards hovering around the father - it reminded me of the X-Men movies. All in all, the episode was fairly entertaining.

This episode was a blast and Tom was at his best; he seemed so focused. When he was acting with the little girl, he was so tender and emotional. Everyone did their best because Tom was directing, and Annette looked so proud of the progress Tom has made over the last five years. The writing was typical freak of the week material, but Tom's direction made it shine.

I loved 'Fragile', and thought that Tom did a great job in his directorial debut. I believe it's the best episode since the 100th!

In one word, 'Fragile' was fantastic! Tom did a surprisingly good job at directing, and he also played a huge role in the episode. I'm proud of him.

I also felt that Allison Mack's acting was great. Her scene with Lex (Michael Rosenbaum) was outstanding.

I thoroughly enjoyed this episode. Tom's performance in front of as well as behind the camera was wonderful, and it was nice to see an episode in which Clark starts his more mature journey, and gets over the Lana angst.

As someone else mentioned, I hope Tom gets the opportunity to direct again.

I think Tom did a good job directing his first episode. I just know he had a great time shattering the glass in the opening scene! He also worked well with his guest co-star. I didn't want to ever see Lex and Lana kiss, but Tom made it exciting. Overall it was a good episode.

I thought this episode was well directed, and that Tom Welling did a great job. I noticed a softer side to this storyline; a slower paced plot without so much hurrying around. Some of the camera angles were unique and very well done.

The connection between Clark and the little girl was especially touching, with the way he brought her out of her shell and got her to open up to him. I loved the fact that Clark's assumption about the girl was spot-on, despite all the evidence pointing towards her being the one causing all the havoc. Great show, as always!

Tom did a terrific job with this episode, and he showed a much softer side of Clark Kent despite all the things that are going on around him. I was very pleased!
