More Nice Comments About Tom
Sat February 25th 2006 @ 11:28PM - James - Tom Welling - 6 Comments
Both nice and unfortunate comments, if the truth be told. In an interview with Glen Winter –- who earned his director's stripes on 'Cyborg', in addition to his usual post as Smallville's director of photography –- over at the French website Planete Smallville (the interview is in French, so Babel Fish may be your friend), Glen has some nice things to say about working with Tom; however he also mentions that during the filming of 'Cyborg', Tom fell quite seriously ill for the first time in five years of shooting the show:
Glen also mentions the usual things, such as Tom working longer hours than the rest of the cast, and still being the same person he was when the show started five years ago. However, of particular interest to me is that as Smallville's director of photography, Glen notes that his very next task after completing 'Cyborg' was helping Tom to prepare for his own directorial debut. I hope it doesn't become a tradition for the Smallville cast and crew to fall ill during a novice director's first outing; that wouldn't be good for morale."During the filming of 'Cyborg', Tom Welling fell sick for the first time in five years and we had to stop filming for four days. Because Tom couldn't work we all had four days off. Tom felt very bad about being sick for the first time in five seasons while I shot my first episode, and I had to say to him: 'Don't worry about it, it's important that you get better.'"
Thanks for the link Valérie!

That babblefish site didn't translate all the words very well, and some it didn't translate at all ... too funny. It was like some kind of weird poem.
I'm really sorry that the interview wasn't done in English as I'd love to understand it better ... Interesting inside info on how things work on a day-to-day basis. Glen said such lovely things about Tom!

I have a question, James. Did you use 'Babel Fish' too, or is your french pretty good? Because the translation is perfect.

So that means Tom had a very good record; not being sick for so many seasons is an achievement itself, especially since it can probably get cold in Canada when they are filming.

Poor Tom! I'd say that going all this time without being seriously ill is a great record, but still. He carries a very heavy burden as the star of the show and has to work incredibly long hours. No wonder he fell ill. I hope he's fully recovered.

What was wrong with Tom? I have never been sick for 4 days in a row! That must have been serious. Was he in the hospital?
