News Round-Up?

Sat December 31st 2005 @ 6:38PM - James - Tom Welling - 2 Comments

Not quite a news round-up, really; it would be so much more impressive if there was some real news to round up! But first thing's first. I've gone and hurt myself, so I won't be able to do much around the site for a few days. Thankfully it's the holiday season for a few more days yet, so the news probably won't be knocking on my door too many times!

Still, there's some good news. Cheaper By The Dozen 2, despite having a shaky start, finally seems to be taking off with audiences. On Wednesday and Thursday of last week it held third place at the box office ahead of Fun With Dick And Jane, and including Friday's figures (those haven't been released yet) I imagine the gross thus far will exceed $40 million.

The other good news is that I did manage to add some screen captures from Judging Amy to the image gallery yesterday. Not as many as I would have liked to add, but it's better than nothing considering I can barely type.

Newspapers Round Up the Year's Best

Thu December 29th 2005 @ 1:30PM - James - Tom Welling - 1 Comment

It's that special time of the year – when the next one is right around the corner – during which all, sundry, and their next-door neighbour as well, blurt out the things that they've really enjoyed over the previous twelve months. Now the newspapers are joining the fray.

The St. Petersburg Times named Superman as their Entertainer of the Year, and notes that "Tom Welling eclipses George Reeves as TV's quintessential Male of Steel." I think they meant "Man of Steel." Either way I might throw a party ...

Meanwhile, Journal News (registration may be required), the Rocky Mount Telegram and other Cox affiliates are running their own feature. Tom's only mentioned briefly in a blurb about this year's top guys, but hey, it's better than nothing:

"Wentworth Miller and Patrick Dempsey: [They] join a band of must-see brothers including Lost's Matthew Fox and Josh Holloway, E-Ring's Benjamin Bratt and Smallville's Tom Welling. These are characters whom men like and women – still the most important viewers to networks and advertisers – love."

Why? Why why? Sexism is still rampant ... I'll just go and sulk over a box of cappuccino truffles.

Tom's a Sight

Thu December 29th 2005 @ 1:12AM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments

I bet you thought I would have long surpassed my Cheaper By The Dozen 2 review quotient; if I'm completely honest, I didn't think I would be posting any more of them either. But this one caught my eye and I felt pretty sure that everyone else would appreciate it as much as I did. The article begins about half-way down the page, and the more pertinent portions include a line which says:

"Charlie Baker, played by the hunky Tom Welling – better known as Clark Kent in the TV series Smallville – is still a sight for sore eyes."

That phrase has always bothered me; from a medical point of view, staring at something (regardless of whether it's nice to look at or not) is unlikely to help sore eyes in the slightest. I have a suspicion that staringattomosis may have been responsible for quite a few nervous tics - and that is a real illness. I just discovered it this morning.

TV.com Names Their "Best of 2005"

Wed December 28th 2005 @ 10:43PM - James - Tom Welling - 1 Comment

If you head over to TV.com they've recently made a list of their "Best of 2005", which includes their favourite shows, DVDs, and actors, to name just a few.

Smallville made the list of Best Science-Fiction shows, and the authors note that "While Smallville has been a success since its 2001 premiere, the series really took things to another level this year." I doubt there are all that many people who would disagree with that sentiment.

Tom also made the Hottest Actors list, in part because "He can go straight from a boy-next-door grin to a sultry, sexy smile in seconds." That's no mean feat in itself, as Clark is just about the most asexual lummox that I've seen on my television in quite a while; at least when he's an alien. When he's a human being, all bets are off.

There's also a viewer's choice section where you can vote for your own favourites, and unsurprisingly both Tom and Smallville are included. To vote for Tom as your own Hottest Actor, head over here; to vote for Smallville as the Best Science-Fiction show, clicky on this. And if you'd like to see what else you can vote on, the main page is a pretty good place to start.

Larger Image from 'Reckoning'

Wed December 28th 2005 @ 2:01AM - James - Tom Welling - 2 Comments

Craig posted this one at KryptonSite back on the 22nd, but what with the busy holiday and all I completely forgot to mention it. Still, hopefully enough time has now passed that posting a larger copy of this image from 'Reckoning', Smallville's hugely-anticipated 100th episode, won't tread on any toes.

This image was first posted in a much smaller format back on December 19th, when it was featured alongside an article in the L.A. Times; just as spoilerific now as it was then, the increase in scale adds some clarity to the slightly murky situation. To some it will be the scene they've been waiting for. To others it will be a pain that knaws deep within their soul. For me, it's a situation where I'll shrug my shoulders and mumble that beloved phrase: "Meh!"

Final Weekend Box Office

Wed December 28th 2005 @ 1:39AM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments

In some pretty good news for its cast, crew, and fans (myself included, which makes a very nice change), Cheaper By The Dozen 2's final weekend box office gross was quite substantially better than 20th Century Fox had anticipated; against an estimate of approximately $14.8 million, the movie ultimately took $15.3 million. And that's with the numbers rounded down - the actual figures represent a discrepancy of approximately $565,000, which isn't too shabby. The exact figures are available at Box Office Mojo.

Cheaper By The Dozen 2 made $20.6 million in its first five days of release, and it's improved performance on Monday has lead to it making a marginal gain on Jim Carrey's third-placed Fun With Dick And Jane. I can rest easy for the time being.

A Few Site Updates

Tue December 27th 2005 @ 7:40PM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments

I've been pottering around the various parts of the site today, updating and amending some of the pages that haven't been touched for a while. I've also got some fan art and other things to add as soon as I get the chance.

The most obvious change that has been made was based on a request that I received when I asked for suggestions a few weeks ago; even though I was asking for suggestions about what to add to the next version of the site (which is probably still quite a long way off), this one was far too important to wait on. Anyway, you should now be able to see a direct link to the image gallery up on the right-hand side of the navigation bar. If you can't see it, you just need to wait for the cached page to update itself.

Cheaper 2 Box Office Estimates

Mon December 26th 2005 @ 8:51PM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments

Although the takings were quite disappointing in comparison to those of the first movie, Cheaper By The Dozen 2 still managed to perform fairly well this past weekend, especially when we consider that the box office as a whole has been suffering from low audience figures over the past year. Against tough competition that included the first-placed King Kong, second-placed The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe, and the third-placed Jim Carrey comedy Fun With Dick And Jane, Cheaper By The Dozen 2 has still managed to place a respectable fourth, with a weekend gross of almost $15 million.

Since its release last Wednesday, the movie has taken just over $20 million; by comparison, Cheaper By The Dozen had grossed close to $50 million after five days in wide release. Why am I not surprised that when I finally like one of Tom's movies, it's the one that performs quite poorly? I must be a bad influence.

The Last of Five

Sun December 25th 2005 @ 8:52PM - James - Tom Welling - 2 Comments

Heh, I managed to put a twist on the title for this one. I'm so easily amused ...

There were requests for half-naked Tom, and behind-the-scenes Tom, and premiere Tom; but the comment that really struck me was the one suggesting I post my own favourite image. That's quite difficult as I have many favourite images, however my favourite collection of images, by far, are those from the Paley Festival in March 2004. The tailored suit and well-styled hair combine to form a look that I think is flawless.

So here's one of my favourite images; I hope that everyone else likes it as much as I do.

Happy Holidays!

"Caption This!" Winner

Sun December 25th 2005 @ 8:13PM - James - Tom Welling - 2 Comments

Hey, I remembered to announce the winner of my little "Caption This!" game. I'm incredibly and ridiculously proud of myself, as you would be if you'd been using your head to crack open a Chocolate Orange. That knocks you loopy, I'm telling ya ...

So who is the lucky winner, and what do they get for winning? I'll answer the second part first: they get nothing. Except, perhaps, the right to gloat over every one who didn't win. Still, that's a prize that I've always enjoyed. Though I'm usually Orange-addled at the time.

So the winner is (drum roll):

Rosa: "And that’s when Nick from morons.org decided to take over the show!"

I found that caption hilarious, though I know some of you will disagree with me. It also helps immensely if you're familiar with the article that spawned the caption; if you haven't already done so, I strongly suggest that you read this. Suddenly it will all make complete sense.

Cheaper By The Dozen 2 Review

Sun December 25th 2005 @ 7:58PM - James - Tom Welling - 1 Comment

You might assume that on a day such as today, I would have better things to be doing than writing a review for the sequel of a movie that I really didn't like all that much. And you would be right: I do have better things to do. But apparently that didn't stop me.

To my surprise, I actually like Cheaper By The Dozen 2! Sure, it's no award winner, but at least it had some semblance of plot. If you'd like to know what I thought, here it is.

The Fourth of Five

Sat December 24th 2005 @ 10:44PM - James - Tom Welling - 4 Comments

As the prototype on whom Dickens based his Scrooge, I'm going to channel that beloved and quintessential literary holiday killjoy: "Bah, Humbug!" Today has been miserable, which is completely typical, and I don't even get a Ghost to cheer me up!

I'd also like to ask that you don't repost any of these images on message boards or your own sites, at least for a few weeks. I really wanted them to be a gift for the loyal (and not so loyal) people who actually visit here; can I just have this one teeny little thing, please? All right, pretty please?

So anyway, what do we all want for tomorrow's final image? I can't make that kind of momentous decision by myself, I'll probably post something ugly.

The Fog Makes A Top Ten List

Sat December 24th 2005 @ 2:17PM - Cindy - Tom Welling - 0 Comments

Okay. Maybe this particular list is not the kind of list Tom would want his first lead role to be on, but that can't be helped. The Fog is on Clint Morris' list of the top ten worst films of the year over on Moviehole. I didn't think the film was as bad as he thought it was, but you gotta love the humor in how Clint described the film:

"Selma Blair looks yummy, Maggie Grace looks divine, Tom Welling looks right at home as a hero ... pity they spent so much time in getting a spunky cast and not coming up with something resembling a script. Makes the original look like The Way We Were."

You've also gotta love the way he described Tom, who was indeed very heroic-looking throughout.

The Third of Five

Fri December 23rd 2005 @ 8:45PM - James - Tom Welling - 2 Comments

I was pleased to see that there were quite a few requests for pictures after yesterday's image post. Unfortunately I couldn't fulfil every one of them, but I did my best to find one image that covered a few of the bases; I'm hoping that this still from 'Spirit' will be a reasonable compromise. Yesterday's image can still be found right here if you missed it.

There are only two more days – and images – left, so if there's something you would especially like to see, be sure to let me know what it is. I'm many things, but psychic isn't one of them!

Circling Serita Trailer

Fri December 23rd 2005 @ 6:08PM - James - Mark Welling - 2 Comments

The trailer for Mark's latest movie, Circling Serita, is now available for download over on the film's website, and based on that trailer I think it looks fantastic! Staying true to the script, it's both atmospheric and enigmatic; besides that, I'm sure it doesn't hurt that the performances also look pretty stellar. I may be very slightly biased, however I'm really looking forward to seeing it.

This may only be Mark's second film, but it looks like he's already getting the hang of this acting thing ...

Thanks Adam!

Cheaper By The Dozen 2 in Hilary's Life Story

Fri December 23rd 2005 @ 12:45PM - James - Tom Welling - 2 Comments

The current issue of Life Story magazine, which is dedicated to Hilary Duff, features an article covering her work on both Cheaper By The Dozen and Cheaper By The Dozen 2. During an interview that appears to be from the first movie, Hilary spoke about how great Tom always is with the kids on set, and next to the blurb was this old but sweet photo of Tom holding one of the Kinsman twins: I won't try to guess which one.

Thanks to Jen for letting me know, and also for putting up with me all through yesterday afternoon!

Refreshing-Aly's "Site of the Month"

Fri December 23rd 2005 @ 12:29PM - James - Tom Welling - 1 Comment

I always get embarrassed when I have to announce things like this, so it's beneficial for my psyche that I don't have to do it very often!

Refreshing-Aly's webmistress, Era, has named TomWelling.org as her website's new "Site of the Month". Embarrasment aside, I would like to thank Era for being one those who lets me know that the effort is all worthwhile. Here's hoping that next year will be even better than this one has been!

The Second of Five

Thu December 22nd 2005 @ 8:25PM - James - Tom Welling - 3 Comments

I'm sensing that the titles of these posts are going to follow a common pattern. As mentioned yesterday, I'll be posting one large, high(ish) quality image per day until the 25th; if you haven't yet seen yesterday's offering, you can find it right where I left it. Today's image is a slightly older image from 2002, shot by Tony Duran for a spread in Entertainment Weekly.

This one doesn't quite meet the request for an old, pre-Smallville image, but it's the best I could do at short notice. If there's an image that you'd like to see posted, drop a comment to let me know.

Hollywood On Set Visits Cheaper 2

Thu December 22nd 2005 @ 4:36PM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments

This week's edition of TV Guide Channel's Hollywood On Set is scheduled to go behind-the-scenes of Tom's current movie, Cheaper By The Dozen 2. The episode will be repeated a few times over the next few days, so check your TV listings. If anyone can capture a video clip of it, please let me know.

Roger Ebert Reviews Cheaper 2

Thu December 22nd 2005 @ 4:00PM - James - Tom Welling - 2 Comments

In a dose of good fortune, Roger Ebert gave Cheaper By The Dozen 2 a hearty three stars out of five following his viewing of the movie.

"As I watched this sequel, a certain good feeling began to make itself known. Yes, the movie is unnecessary. However, it is unnecessary at a higher level of warmth and humor than the recent remake Yours, Mine and Ours."

He doesn't mention Tom at all, even in passing, but at least everything else seemed to keep him happy. I suppose you can't get a much better advocate for a movie than Roger Ebert, so I can't complain too much. Still, it would have been nice to see Tom's name there somewhere ...

Thanks go to Cindy for passing along the link to that one.

I'm going to be taking it easy over the next few days, so please don't be concerned if things seem to be a little slower than usual. The promised daily picture will still be posted, Cheaper By The Dozen 2's Box Office status won't be forgotten, and anything else of importance will probably be noted down as well. I just won't be running myself ragged in the way that I usually do.

The First of Five

Wed December 21st 2005 @ 9:39PM - James - Tom Welling - 7 Comments

From now through the 25th I'll be posting one large, high(ish) quality image per day as a gift of sorts to everyone who's hung around here over the past year. Unless I'm far, far worse at maths than I thought – and I'm utterly dreadful at maths, so I doubt it's even possible to be worse than I thought I was – that should end up being five images. Who knows which images I'll choose to share over the next few days. For now I'll start with a fairly recent, and fairly popular still from 'Aqua'.

I can't make any promises, but if there's one particular image that you'd like me to post, please let me know.

Review Cheaper By The Dozen 2 Yourself!

Wed December 21st 2005 @ 9:28PM - James - Tom Welling - 5 Comments

I imagine a fair few of you have already seen Cheaper By The Dozen 2 by now, and I'd really like to know what everyone thought of it. I won't get to see it myself for around a week so I'll live vicariously until then - and I'll post a review of my own as soon as I have seen it.

Leave your review down in the comments, and let me know if you'd like it added to the reviews page.

Final Pre-Release Reviews ...

Wed December 21st 2005 @ 10:07AM - James - Tom Welling - 2 Comments

These are the last reviews that will be posted on TomWelling.org before Cheaper By The Dozen 2's US release later today - are we all excited?! Yeah. I suppose there's a chance that I'd be more excited if I actually lived in the United States.

Some of the reviews are good, some of them are bad, and all of them are – debatably – an interesting read:

  • The Washington Herald; "Cheaper by the Dozen 2 is an improvement over 2003's Cheaper by the Dozen, which was a dismal movie but a big family-film hit. Having said that, I will also say that Cheaper by the Dozen 2 is a chore to sit through ..."
  • Akron Beacon Journal; "[Tom Baker's] oldest son, Charlie (Smallville's Tom Welling), wants to move away, open a garage and forget about a college education. Sensing that his family is breaking up, Tom gets everyone to agree to one last get-together at a cabin in the country before the inevitable happens."
  • The Baltimore Sun; "This movie is one huge pile-on, with everyone in the audience feeling like the poor unfortunate at the bottom of the pile." Grade D
  • The Times-Picayune; "If for no other reason, Cheaper by the Dozen 2 surpasses its predecessor by keeping Hunt's character with the family for the entire film." 2.5 Stars
  • Pittsburgh Post-Gazette; "With its PG rating, however, it's safe, harmless entertainment. It's like soup made from a dry mix, stirred into water and heated in the microwave. Sort of looks like the real thing but can't hold a candle to the stuff created from scratch and an old family recipe, and simmered lovingly on the stove for hours." 1.5 Stars
  • The South Carolina State; "At least the kids are getting along - almost too well. The oldest, Charlie Baker (Tom Welling of Smallville) and Anne Murtaugh (Jaime King), are batting eyes at one another."
  • The Seattle Weekly; "Eldest daughter Nora (Piper Perabo) is married and preggers; eldest son Charlie (Tom Welling) is working in a Chicago garage (surely just a ruse to get him all sweaty and axle-greasy for his Smallville admirers); and Lorraine has a New York internship - but hey, what the hell, why not?"
  • The Hollywood Reporter; "Behind-the-scenes contributions are sturdy enough, but virtually everything about this Cheaper production, which just wrapped principal photography in September, feels hurried along to meet its lucrative release date."
  • The Boston Herald; "The entire cast is reunited, but why? With Bonnie Hunt, Hilary Duff, Tom Welling (Smallville), Eugene Levy and the goofy godliness of Steve Martin all under the same roof, you would think a smidgen of family fun was in order." 1 Star
I hope my review of the move is a little more positive than most of these.

L.A. Times Likes Cheaper 2

Wed December 21st 2005 @ 4:35AM - Cindy - Tom Welling - 1 Comment

I think it's fair to say that the reviews for the film have been mixed, but the L.A. Times has a suprisingly positive review for Cheaper By The Dozen 2. You can read it on their Calendar Live site.

Although this review doesn't mention Tom by name, I thought I'd provide a link to it in case the negative reviews were getting people down. Fluffy postive news is never a bad thing, is it? And it was surprising to me that the writer actually loved Carmen Electra. Maybe there's a lot more to her than just a pretty face.

Mmm ... where have I heard that said about someone else?

More Cheaper 2 Cast Interviews

Tue December 20th 2005 @ 8:55PM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments

Just as expected, it doesn't look like Tom was at the recent press junket for Cheaper By The Dozen 2, but at least there are still some fun interviews rolling out from the rest of the cast. Alongside yet another rehash of their old article – at least it has been updated very slightly this time – ET Online has posted a video of a round table interview with Steve Martin, Bonnie Hunt, Eugene Levy and Carmen Elektra.

The press junket was originally scheduled to be featured on Tuesday's edition of Entertainment Tonight, but it has since been pushed back to Wednesday night. I guess we'll know who was there soon enough ...

Smallville Season Five UK Premiere

Tue December 20th 2005 @ 7:38PM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments

For those of us in the UK who don't have the benefit of digitally-assisted viewing – and also for those of us who do – it looks like Smallville's fifth season will be starting on E4 on Monday, January 9th, 2006, at 9:00pm. In past years the advertising from Channel 4 has left a little to be desired, so here's hoping that the new season's success in the 'States will have given them a very loud wake-up call!

I'd hate to have to write angry letters to them again.

'Fanatic' Episode Stills

Tue December 20th 2005 @ 9:13AM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments

Craig has just posted up a set of images from 'Fanatic', Smallville's first brand new episode of 2006, over at KryptonSite. The vast majority of the images feature Jonathan Kent, however there is one pretty good image of Clark: but what's that I spy?

I know actors wear make-up, but come on now; does it have to be quite that obvious? Tom's lips are the colour of rose petals in this picture. It's 'Metamorphosis' all over again!

More Reviews

Tue December 20th 2005 @ 6:42AM - Cindy - Tom Welling - 1 Comment

A few more reviews are up for Tom's newest film, Cheaper By The Dozen 2.

The Australian movie site YourMovies.com.au reviews the film and gives it three stars out of a possible five. A solid score, even if it means the film isn't exactly a masterpiece. Disappointing news, however, comes near the end of the article when the writer reveals the sparse screen time Tom has in the film:

"Fans of Duff and Welling needn't bother rushing out to see this film. The stars have about 10 minutes of screen time between them."

Meanwhile Cinema Blend also gave Cheaper By The Dozen 2 three stars out of five, noting that "The film works because Steve Martin is good and Bonnie Hunt is good and Superman is good looking."

On the other hand, Spero News seems to think the movie is awful. So we'll just ignore them and put a pox on their holiday season!

I'm still planning on seeing it. It looks like fun and my kids are really looking forward to it.

L.A. Times On Smallville's Success

Mon December 19th 2005 @ 7:11PM - James - Tom Welling - 8 Comments

I spotted this L.A. Times article first thing this morning, but at that point I didn't feel it was really worth mentioning; there isn't all that much about Tom in the article, and I was sure that most of the more Smallville-specific sites, including KryptonSite and Smallville News would mention it. I didn't think it was worth my trouble: but more fool me!

As it turns out, the article's print version contains a hugely spoilerific image of Clark in the Fortress of Solitude, and that image alone makes it worth my time. Do not, and I repeat do not view the image unless you want to be spoiled in a major way.

Cheaper 2 Cast interviews

Mon December 19th 2005 @ 9:52AM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments

No, Tom's not interviewed - or at least an interview with him hasn't been uploaded yet. I'm far too pessimistic to expect that there will be one, but maybe my pessimism will, for once, be rewarded with a slap across the chops.

Nonetheless, IESB has some pretty fun interviews with Steve Martin, Eugene Levy, and Bonnie Hunt, which were recorded during a recent press junket for Cheaper By The Dozen 2. IESB notes that we should look out for more updates over the next few days, so keep those eyes and toes crossed for something involving Tom.

New Cheaper By The Dozen 2 Featurette

Mon December 19th 2005 @ 8:34AM - James - Tom Welling - 1 Comment

I was surprised that we hadn't seen one of these a lot sooner. Movies.com has posted a new four-minute-long featurette for Cheaper By The Dozen 2, which includes a few new clips and some quotes from the cast; but once again, Tom is barely featured in it! Tom is shown in a few very short clips, including a nice scene where the Baker family is roasting marshmallows around the campfire, however there aren't even two words from him!

I've converted the featurette to a downloadable format, just in case you want to keep it; but as Tom's barely in it you may not feel it's worth the trouble. At least you now have the option.

Many thanks to Era for passing along the link to me! Be sure to visit Era's website, Refreshing, if you're a fan of Alyson Stoner.

UK Cheaper By The Dozen 2 TV Ad

Sun December 18th 2005 @ 4:47PM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments

It would be pretty unreasonable of me to keep asking for and posting video clips of shows from the US and other countries if I can't even get clips from here in the UK, wouldn't it? Two different Cheaper By The Dozen 2 ads have been airing in the UK over the last couple of days – at least that's all I've seen – and more's the pity, one of them doesn't show Tom at all. But one of them does, so here it is.

It's not hugely different to the American ads, but I guess it's different enough.

News Of The World Reviews Cheaper By The Dozen 2

Sun December 18th 2005 @ 1:18PM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments

Granted, I don't tend to take anything a tabloid newspaper says very seriously; and furthermore, I only "read" them for the pictures. But that doesn't stop them from very occasionally containing a little gem.

In this case, today's News of the World contains the first proper review of Cheaper By The Dozen 2 that I've managed to find. As expected, the movie has a been rated PG both in the US and the UK, and Polly Graham had this to say about it:

"The gags come fast and furious as the Bakers clash with the Murtaughs when they meet on holiday. It's a great one for teens, especially as Hilary Duff, of Lizzie Maguire fame, is one of the overgrown kids and there's cute Tom Welling for the girlies as her brother. The first film lost it at the end when it tried to get serious. This one just goes for cheap laughs - making it a good family romp."

3 stars out of 5

They're being sexist again. Story of my life ...

ET On MTV Video Clip

Sat December 17th 2005 @ 7:39PM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments

With many thanks once again to Cindy, who frequently saves my bacon when it comes to video clips, here's the video of the Cheaper By The Dozen 2 segment from this weekend's edition of ET On MTV. There was a lot of recycled footage (at least I'd seen a lot of it before) but thankfully Tom got a pretty decent look-in this time.

I find it interesting that he's still being dressed in a lot of blue and red, even when he's not playing Superm ... err, Clark Kent. I wonder if he ever gets bored?

Tom Is A Movie Idol

Sat December 17th 2005 @ 3:03PM - Cindy - Tom Welling - 0 Comments

In issue #39 of Movie Idols magazine, on newstands now, Tom is the cover! Click on the link to read a snippet of the article. You have to buy it to read the whole thing but the issue includes a poster.

The mag shipped starting November 30th, or so the website says, but I was just at Barnes & Noble on Friday and didn't see it. I was over in that section too; I was looking at the film mags and screenwriting mags so if Tom was on the cover of something, I would have seen it. Maybe the local B&N doesn't carry it. I'm going to have to keep an eye out for that.

Anyway, the write up on Tom is very nice and you gotta love how they trot out all the names from on his IMDb page ...

"They’re the most famous chiselled abs in Hollywood. In five years Tom Welling has enjoyed a kryptonite-induced transformation from jobbing bit-part actor to an international superstar, and there’s every sign that this is just the beginning. Today he’s a TV star who is starting to make his name as a Movie Idol - yet we reckon that Tom has all the attributes to be soon a major force in Tinseltown."

"It’s been an amazing journey for the talented 28-year-old Thomas John Patrick Welling, born April 26 1977 to a father who worked as an executive for General Motors and a mother who describes herself as a "home engineer". Perhaps not the environment one might immediately expect to promote a career in performing, yet Tom’s elder brother Mark is also an actor – you can see his work in the film Wrestling."

It's nice that they also mention Mark, but he is actually Tom's younger brother.

Thanks to Pat for the tip.

Send A Cheaper By The Dozen 2 E-Card

Sat December 17th 2005 @ 12:03PM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments

It looks like just about everything on Cheaper By The Dozen 2's official site has now been activated. All the clips were added early yesterday, and last night the E-Cards page was also added; the E-Card contains a few really nice pictures of Tom, including one that I really, really like - I think it's the maroon shorts. I always said that I don't dislike everything he wears!

There's also a competition to win one of 13 copies of the Cheaper By The Dozen Special Edition on DVD. The contest doesn't officially open until December 19th, and closes on January 2nd. As always you should read the official rules for more information.

Guardian, I Love You So

Sat December 17th 2005 @ 11:35AM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments

I was just reading an article about upcoming Holiday movies in the print edition of today's The Guardian, and I was so tempted to post something about it because it mentioned Cheaper By The Dozen 2. I only stopped myself because I didn't feel like transcribing it; but as luck would have it, the article is also available in The Guardian's online edition, so I can continue to be lazy.

It appears that I'm not the only jaded British pain in the posterior to offer my biting thoughts on this year's silver-screen fare:

"The subject of doom inevitably leads to a discussion of Steve Martin's latest film. Cheaper By The Dozen 2 sounds like a parody of a film title: The Next-To-The-Last Of The Mohicans, Jason And Freddie Versus The Passion Of The Christ. Cheaper By The Dozen 2 will be released the day after Christmas, the very last week of the film season. What the British people did to deserve this is beyond me."

Surprisingly enough, I don't completely agree with that article. I do think Cheaper By The Dozen 2 looks better than the first movie, if for no other reason than Tom having some real slapstick comedy scenes in this one. Charlie was mopier than Clark in Cheaper By The Dozen ...

More Chances to Win Cheaper 2 Goodies

Sat December 17th 2005 @ 10:59AM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments

If you're one of the UK fans who weren't very keen on entering their family photos into the Kodak EasyShare contest a few days ago, you'll possibly be happy to learn that you still stand a chance of winning one of those Cheaper By The Dozen 2 goodie bags.

Over at FemaleFirst.co.uk you can enter into a draw to win one of three goodie bags; the contest closes on January 16th, 2006, and all you have to do to stand a chance of winning is answer this simple question: "Which character did Eugene Levy play in the hit-comedy American Pie?"

Meanwhile, at MyKindaPlace you can win one of five goodie bags. That competition closes on January 6th, 2006, and to win you need to "Name the TV show that [the gorgeous] Tom Welling stars in?"

The goodie bags contain:

  • Rucksack
  • Camera
  • Cap
  • Keychain
  • Photo frame
  • Frisbee
  • Cards
  • Pencil Toppers
Good luck to everyone who enters either of these contests!

Tom's a "Big Screen Boy"

Sat December 17th 2005 @ 6:59AM - James - Tom Welling - 2 Comments

Hey, Tom's on TeenPeople.com again! This time he's number five on their randomly-ordered list of this Holiday season's "Big Screen Boys". Unfortunately, as usual, you need to login to access Tom's page. But woo hoo! Thanks to 'Rene this login-deficient webmaster can let you know what was said:

"Yep, the Smallville star goes there again [to the big screen, I assume] along with Hilary Duff and the rest of the brood in the giant family sequel."

And hey, lookit! They chose a nice picture this time. I applaud them for that.

New Smallville Preview Trailer

Sat December 17th 2005 @ 6:29AM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments

Craig over at KryptonSite has linked to a new, extended Smallville season five trailer that has been posted over at the WB58 Affiliate site. The trailer is highly spoilerific and should not be viewed if you have a problem with knowing what may happen!

Earlier this week Craig also posted some high quality screen captures from the same trailer, and if I do say so myself, they're good. But again, only if you don't mind spoilers.

ET On MTV Smothered With Kids

Sat December 17th 2005 @ 5:44AM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments

Last night's ET On MTV featured a segment about Cheaper By The Dozen 2, which included a shot of Tom with a voiceover that noted, "Smallville star Tom Welling rejoin[s] the cast." The segment was mostly about Hilary Duff, as most of the recent entertainment news features have been, and it's also possible that this may have mainly been a repeat of an earlier segment from July.

It should air again over the weekend, so hopefully I'll be able to find out for sure whether it was anything new. Check local listings to find out when the show airs in your area.

Big thanks to Jazzy for the tip!

Oops, I Forgot - Final Poll Results!

Fri December 16th 2005 @ 8:23AM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments

My little poll about what Tom may have worn on Tuesday night ended yesterday, and it completely slipped my mind (an eel lives in there, so it's very slippery) to give one final update.

And - drum roll please! And once again - drum roll please! Well that's obviously not working. So to the results:

Riding high with 56% of the votes (62 votes in total) was the option "Tom will look ... Absolutely great!" There's no accounting for taste when it comes to curtains and tablecloths, but that's what the majority voted for, so I can't argue. I'll just pretend everyone was voting for what he'd look like from the neck up.

In second place, with 23% of the votes (26 votes in total) was "Tom will look ... Invisible. Hiding all night!" I give kudos to the incredible foresight of everyone who voted for that one before we knew whether or not he'd shown up. If you voted for it afterwards, please slap yourself for skewing the results of my highly scientific poll.

Following on with 15% of the votes (17 votes in total) was "Tom will look ... Passable yet uninspired!" I was almost tempted to name that option the cowards way out of having to make a real decision; though most of the time he does pretty much fit the description, so I'll let it slide.

And finally my favourite option, and the one I voted for. With only 5% of the votes (and only a measly six votes in total) it's "Tom will look ... A lot like a bay window!" It's not my fault that his outfits often resemble window or table furniture, so I plead innocent on charges of cruelty to his wardrobe. I do think he'd look good dressed in a dustbin liner, so my cruelty is relative.

New Cheaper By The Dozen 2 Clips

Fri December 16th 2005 @ 5:32AM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments

It looks like the "Clips" segment of the Cheaper By The Dozen 2 website has finally been updated with seven clips from the movie, although disappointingly there's only one which features Tom's character, Charlie. It's the clip labelled "spring break", just in case you don't want to watch all of them.

The clips are also available in a slightly more accessible form at RopeofSilicon.com. I've also converted the flash video file into a smaller Quicktime MOV, which you can download. I'll take this opportunity to apologise for the nasty tag which will be placed on all of TomWelling.org's future videos; it appears that once again the actions of a few have spoilt it for everyone.

If You Were Wondering

Thu December 15th 2005 @ 9:58AM - Cindy - Tom Welling - 0 Comments

The Access Hollywood segment about the Cheaper By The Dozen 2 premiere featured both the horse-drawn sleighs the cast arrived in, and Carmen Electra's overly-refined figure, but not much else. It wasn't worth the time I spent fast forwarding my TiVo ...

I'll never get those 15 seconds back; they're gone forever. I wonder if I should send Nancy O'Dell a bill.

Another 100 Minutes of Fun - I hope!

Thu December 15th 2005 @ 8:35AM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments

That's right, it seems that Cheaper By The Dozen 2 will be around one hour and forty minutes long, just as the first one was. I hope this one fills out the time a little more than Cheaper By The Dozen managed to; it's just the right kind of length to take the kids to, but it's also just long enough to drive slightly more discerning viewers up the wall!

Play Time!

Thu December 15th 2005 @ 3:35AM - James - Tom Welling - 22 Comments

It's the holiday season, a time for peace and good will to all human kind (unless they're annoying). With that in mind, it's game time! I've never done game time before, so I'm stealing from the numerous other sites that have - and there are far too many to name, so I won't try.

First up is "Caption This!" It's an old favourite in which you, very simply, write a funny caption for the picture that I've posted.

I'm a spoil sport, so I'm banning all captions that refer to flashlights and bondage. Imagination is the key! The contest will be open for about ten days, assuming that I remember to close it, and the winning caption – as chosen by me because it's my game – will be announced somewhere around the 25th of December. I don't remember whether that date has any significance.

You should leave your captions down in the comments, and please try to keep them PG-13, or whatever the equivalent is where you come from.

Entertainment News Serves Up Cheaper 2

Thu December 15th 2005 @ 3:29AM - Cindy - Tom Welling - 0 Comments

Well, as James had predicted (and I had feared) without Tom Welling posing prettily on the red carpet, there was little to interest his fans on the nightly entertainment news; this was despite fairly in-depth coverage all-round about Cheaper By The Dozen 2's world premiere. I watched E! News Live, The Insider, and the aforementioned Entertainment Tonight. Access Hollywood doesn't air here until later tonight but I will catch that too, although there is probably little point ...

Despite Tom being so conspicuously absent, there were a few reasons to have tuned into those shows. There were no new clips from the film on any of them, but there was a cute segment on The Insider with the Desperate Housewives twins. They had made a "home video" of their day leading up to the premiere; however, I doubt their parents' handicam would have produced such a smoothly taped video ...

There were also some red carpet antics with Bonnie Hunt over on Entertainment Tonight. The always charming Bonnie joked with the reporter (I forget his name) while they sat on the sleigh she'd ridden on to the premiere. She alone was worth watching Entertainment Tonight for; which was good since the sound bite they showed of Steve Martin was extremely disappointing. Steve was on for all of about eight seconds while he recycled a completely lame joke he had also used on last night's The Tonight Show.

Maybe in the New Year there will be room in Tom's schedule for talk show appearances. After all he will likely be needed to push the show's upcoming 100th episode, which will air (not at all coincidentally) during the crucial February sweeps time frame. At least we can hope he'll make some appearances for that!

Should I hold my breath that maybe, just maybe, The WB will throw us poor Tom fans a bone? Mmm ... probably not. Especially since James was just telling me how much he appreciated my help. After all, I wouldn't want to expire on him!

Cheaper by the Dozen 2 On ET

Wed December 14th 2005 @ 1:16PM - James - Tom Welling - 1 Comment

Cindy let me know earlier today that the cast of Cheaper By The Dozen 2 are scheduled to be featured on tonight's edition of Entertainment Tonight, in interviews conducted from the red carpet of last night's premiere. I was holding out on posting about it until I found out for sure whether or not Tom showed up, and right now it seems to be fairly certain that he was otherwise engaged ...

So alas, there won't be a red carpet interview with Tom. But perhaps, if we're really lucky, there will be some clips from the movie that feature Tom, and maybe even some interview snippets from the set. Keep those fingers crossed!

Amusingly (to me, which means it's probably not funny in the slightest) ET Online have recycled their old Cheaper by the Dozen 2 article yet again. At least the icy blue is quite pretty.

Tom Not At Cheaper 2 Premiere

Wed December 14th 2005 @ 10:33AM - James - Tom Welling - 11 Comments

It seems likely that Tom didn't turn up to the Cheaper By The Dozen 2 premiere last night after all, which is a shame. It's especially disappointing because I won't be able to annoy anyone else by discussing Tom's horrific dress sense! Heh, my last posting certainly got some "interesting" responses about that and various other things.

So anyway, there are no pictures of Tom from the premiere yet, and it seems unlikely that it would have taken this long for some to show up if he'd been there. But to keep my promise about not making fun of Tom's clothes any more, I've manipped a new outfit for him that will hopefully please everyone. Enjoy!

Random Thoughts For Wednesday

Wed December 14th 2005 @ 5:00AM - James - Tom Welling - 4 Comments

I'm bored, so I'm going to ramble a little about one or two things that have been on my mind lately.

Firstly, the poll about what Tom might have worn to the Cheaper 2 premiere on Tuesday night (assuming he turned up, which I'm personally not counting on because he has a poor track record) is going quite well. 57% feel that Tom would have looked great – I consider that relative, as he'd probably look pretty good in a burlap sack – while 26% feel he's most likely going to be invisible. 14% think he'll look passable, and a measly 3% think he'll be wearing the curtains again.

I'm not saying which I voted for; I plead multiple amendments and don't have to say a word. Though I probably can't do that since I'm not American.

And now onto something that has been concerning me in recent months.

Comparatively speaking, TomWelling.org is small in both content and viewerbase. It doesn't have a domain name that most people will instantly type into the address bar, and it isn't part of a big network of sites. For the past three and half years TomWelling.org has been me, and me alone, and that only changed very recently with the addition of Cindy to help me out.

The only thing TomWelling.org has ever really had going for it is the fact that I like to make things as unique and personal as possible, sometimes to the point of alienating people who think I'm a weirdo! I spend a long time writing original content for everyone to enjoy.

And yet lately, many of the bigger and more popular sites are copying the content from here. The worst part is that since they're more popular, the likelihood is that many assume I copied them!

It's the kind of thing that makes you wonder why you ever tried to do something original in the first place.

New Cheaper By The Dozen 2 Stills

Wed December 14th 2005 @ 1:50AM - Cindy - Tom Welling - 0 Comments

The movie news site RopeofSilicon.com has once again posted several new stills from Cheaper By The Dozen 2.

There's just one new image of Tom, unless you also count a photo which only shows his arm as his face is hidden behind Hilary Duff's "Team Baker" flag, but you take what you can get.

US Cheaper 2 Site Gets Major Update

Wed December 14th 2005 @ 1:08AM - Cindy - Tom Welling - 3 Comments

I think Hell has frozen over. The US Cheaper By The Dozen 2 website has finally been updated.

After what seems like eons of being extremely boring, the site now sports a very festive Christmas theme which features twinkly lights and snowflakes. Although I would like to point out that the lights probably shouldn't be twinkling since they appear to be unplugged, but details, details ...

So head on over to check out the new design. However unless you're a huge fan of Sister Sledge, I would suggest you click on the "Music" icon in the upper right hand corner to turn down the volume on the endless loop of a clip from their signature hit, "We Are Family". (The same song was repeated ad nauseam on the website for the first movie. Clearly my letters of protest on behalf of my eardrums were a waste of time!)

Unfortunately, the new Holiday eCard and Clips features aren't active yet, but hopefully they will be soon.

I didn't spot much of anything new there for Tom fans except for a couple of photos in the "Talk is Cheap" audio gallery. But one of those images in particular is quite a striking one!

FACES Spotlights A "Super Heartthrob"

Tue December 13th 2005 @ 4:11PM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments

The December edition of the Malaysian magazine FACES has included Tom in its monthly spotlight, naming him a "Super Heartthrob". The article is pretty much nothing new, but it's still really nice to see another example of Tom's worldwide appeal.

I hope they're correct in describing Cheaper By The Dozen 2 as "a movie guaranteed to get you laughing and keep you entertained." So far Tom's movies are 0 for 2 on the James 'O Meter, and James is very unhappy about that - or so he tells me.

Here's Looking at You Kid

Tue December 13th 2005 @ 2:40PM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments

For once being in a big family can be considered a boon - but only, at least for the time being, if you live in the United Kingdom.

In the run-up to Cheaper By The Dozen 2's release in the UK on December 26th, Fox UK, in conjunction with Kodak EasyShare Gallery, is offering us Brits the chance to win a whole slew of goodies; from a Kodak V550 camera, to Cheaper By The Dozen 2 rucksacks, caps and note books. It's a veritable treasure trove of knickknacks that I'd be happy to throw at a five-year-old family member. Literally. Except the camera, 'cause I'd be scared of damaging it.

All you have to do to stand a chance of winning one of the prize packs is upload a photo of your own extra-large family to Kodak's EasyShare Gallery, and then email the link to the contest address. The bigger your family is, the higher your chance of winning!

It's possible that somebody a little more suspicious than myself may very well assume that Fox and Kodak get more out of this than we do. Ah well, I've only got a family of five anyway ...

Place Your Bets Now!

Tue December 13th 2005 @ 8:53AM - James - Tom Welling - 3 Comments

I know that I often make fun of Tom's dress sense, but it really is all meant as good-humoured fun; in that vein, as the Cheaper By The Dozen 2 premiere is scheduled to take place at the Mann Village Theatre in California this evening, I've set up a jokey little poll where you can vote on what Tom's likely to be wearing. And there's also an option for "he won't be there," just in case ...

So place those bets now! And feel free to leave a comment about your choice if you'd like to.

If any of TomWelling.org's readers are intending to watch the arrivals at the theatre tonight, and would like to share any snapshots or anecdotes, please get in touch with me. Hopefully I'll have one or two pictures to post myself, assuming that Tom does in fact turn up.

TV's Best Video Clip

Tue December 13th 2005 @ 7:12AM - James - Tom Welling - 2 Comments

As I mentioned a few days ago, TV Guide Channel premiered its TV's Best 2005 special on Monday, and Tom was featured on the show's "Hottest Male Body" segment alongside Prison Break's Wentworth Miller, who came in first, and Shamar Moore, who came in third. Tom was sitting pretty between the two ...

Thanks to Cindy for the video clip, which you can download here.

Tom's segment was essentially the same old, same old, with comments about how he could probably eat a dinosaur and not put on any weight. The clips included shots from the 2004 WB Upfronts, when Tom wore a beard like Bigfoot's (which is apt) and a shirt like a printed napkin, the Ocean's 12 premiere, at which he looked a little like Elvis, and this year's Television Critics presentation, where he looked ... very good, actually.

I think I'm beginning to channel Steven Cojocaru.

Win Tickets For Cheaper By The Dozen 2

Tue December 13th 2005 @ 2:24AM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments

It looks like there are a few more venues giving away the chance see an advanced screening of Tom's upcoming movie, Cheaper By The Dozen 2:

For those of you in North Carolina and the surrounding area, Triangle.com is giving registered users a chance to see the movie in an advanced screening at 7:00pm on Monday, December 19th, at Consolidated Crossroads 20. I'm not sure when entry into the draw closes.

Meanwhile, The Houston Chronicle is giving away tickets for an advanced screening on Tuesday, December 20th, at the Edwards Grand Palace. The contest deadline is December 16th.

And last, but by no means least, the Sacramento Bee is also giving away tickets for an advanced screening of Cheaper By The Dozen 2 to registered users. This one also closes on December 16th; I had some trouble logging in to the site to find out more. Hopefully nobody else has that problem.

Good luck to everyone who enters any of these prize draws!

Tom's Got His Fans

Tue December 13th 2005 @ 12:57AM - James - Tom Welling - 1 Comment

The name Welling pops up everywhere, including on numerous British soccer scoreboards that mention the Welling United team – which has little to do with this site whatsoever, aside from the fact that I find the coincidence amusing and annoying in equal measure – and in various otherwise irrelevant little articles from across the globe.

One such article popped up in the Youth Focus of Monday's Brenham Banner-Press; local High School senior Samantha Janes was interviewed in this edition, and she cites Tom as both her favourite actor, and as the famous person she would most like to meet, "because he is so cute."

Like a teddy bear. Or a hamster. Or a pygocentrus nattereri ... at least I think red-bellied piranha are cute. Maybe it's just me.

Tom In The West Australian

Mon December 12th 2005 @ 2:29AM - James - Tom Welling - 2 Comments

Here's where I learn to keep my mouth shut (or typing fingers glued together) and not tempt fate. Only a matter of hours ago I mentioned that Tom and Smallville may soon be all over the Australian media, and as it turns out ... I spoke too late; the show was also featured in Sunday's edition of The West Australian, to name just the one I know about. I'm guessing it was probably in many others as well!

Isn't all of this publicity just peachy? Which segues nicely into the article, as this is what the authors had to say about the protagonists in Smallville's second season:

"They're all grown up (except peachy Tom Welling, who still looks like a school kid) ..."

I pose this query: would they dare to say that when his face is furred-up like a yeti? I know peaches are meant to be a little furry, but that's definitely stretching the boundaries.

Thanks go once again to Erica for sending along the scan.

Tom in Australia's Sunday Times

Sun December 11th 2005 @ 2:52PM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments

You know, I missed this. Back when Smallville first aired on Australian TV a few years ago, the show and its stars would often appear in magazines and newspapers; now, with the show back on Network Ten, it looks like the same may be happening again.

With huge thanks to Erica, here's a scan of today's Sunday Times television guide, which features a short interview with Tom. Once again it's mostly old quotes, but I'm sure there must be some readers who haven't read Tom's entire interview back-catalogue yet ...

EW Publishes Letter From Tom Welling Fan

Sat December 10th 2005 @ 5:02PM - Cindy - Tom Welling - 3 Comments

Well, here's my first news item! In the most recent edition of Entertainment Weekly they published a missive about Tom that a reader sent in:

"I always look forward to your cover. But this week when I turned the pages to Tom Welling staring back at me not once, but twice, I was breathless. It's no 'wonder' why Smallville is such a huge hit ('Small Wonders: TV Winners & Losers'). Welling is a hottie and can fill Superman's boots without question. If you are taking requests now, I would like to see him on the cover for the 100th episode. Thanks for the drool session!"

I have to say that I completely agree with her. Smart woman. Of course all of Tom Welling's fans would love to see Tom on the cover of Entertainment Weekly to help celebrate the 100th episode of Smallville, which is set to air on January 26th. Let's hope they see the light of reason and do just that.

Thanks to RakuMon for the tip since I haven't gotten my copy yet.

'Lexmas' Screen Caps

Fri December 9th 2005 @ 11:23AM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments

There aren't quite as many screen captures from this episode as I usually make, however that isn't due to my current and overwhelming case of lazyitis; it was unfortunately unavoidable, as Tom simply wasn't featured in this episode as much as he usually is. Which was to be expected, as the episode is named 'Lexmas' and he plays the other guy ... err, alien. But I still managed to make 373 screen captures, so it's not all bad!

Head over to the image gallery to view those.

New 'Lexmas' Image

Fri December 9th 2005 @ 6:53AM - James - Tom Welling - 2 Comments

Isn't this nice. Clark's all dressed up for the Christmas party. Do you see that hair? And that nice fitted suit? And even the tie? This is what Tom should be wearing when he play dress-up; he always looks better in the traditional outfits than he does when he's being a clothes horse; let this be a lesson.

(This message brought to you by JAS Fashion House: Home of the World's Prettiest Pink Tutu's™ - which we happen to think Tom would look good in, by the way!)

New Cheaper By The Dozen 2 TV Ad

Fri December 9th 2005 @ 5:00AM - James - Tom Welling - 2 Comments

During last night's episode of Smallville ('Lexmas' for those keeping track), the WB aired another new TV trailer for Cheaper By The Dozen 2. This one features a rather dejected-looking Charlie agreeing to join the family on their trip to the lake. Make that grimy and dejected-looking.

Download the new TV advertisment!

Thanks go once again to Cindy, who I should probably announce will now be standing in for me at the "news desk" whenever I'm unavailable. Please try to give her a warm welcome!

Many More Cheaper 2 Images

Thu December 8th 2005 @ 9:36PM - James - Tom Welling - 1 Comment

It looks like good ol' RopeofSilicon.com has done it again, with a huge update to their Cheaper By The Dozen 2 stills gallery. There are 34 new images in total! It's a shame that only four of the images have Tom in them, but three of those are a solo shot where he's finally front and centre, so I can live with it.

"New" Cheaper 2 Article?

Thu December 8th 2005 @ 9:24PM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments

Everything's one big joke to me these days, including this amusing little occurence at ET Online: they've just posted up a "new" article about Cheaper By The Dozen 2, but somehow it seemed familiar to me. As it turns out, that's no surprise since they posted the same article before, back in July! See, you can read that right here.

What's that you say? I mixed up the links?! No matter, they are both identical.

One More Amusing Comment for the Pile

Wed December 7th 2005 @ 11:45PM - James - Tom Welling - 5 Comments

It's amazing what kind of places you'll see Tom's name popping up; take this recent article on morons.org, for instance. The article is supposed to be about the FCC quelling the all-important First Amendment on television broadcasts: I say "supposed to be about" because I didn't exactly pay any attention to the real subject once I saw Tom's name in there. Whilst waxing at length about what may or may not be considered indecent, the author, Nick makes a random comment that would even do me proud (and remember I've spoken about everything from cheese to Ferrero Rocher on here):

"What one person finds "decent" another person will always find "indecent". I know I'm offended every time I watch Smallville and Tom Welling doesn't take off his shirt. I'm also offended that he always seems to be wearing pants."

Heh, that's funny. May I suggest that Nick watches The Fog? It has shirtless, pantless Tom Welling, and more importantly the main character borrowed his name. Win-win.

Thanks to Cindy for the link to that one.

TV Guide Does it Again

Wed December 7th 2005 @ 5:19AM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments

Those guys and gals at TV Guide really seem to like Tom at the moment; the new issue of TV Guide apparently notes that Tom will be featured on a special two-part show called TV's Best 2005, in the "Hottest Bodies" segment. Apparently they think he has "super sex appeal". There's no argument here, which definitely makes a nice change.

The "Hottest Bodies" segment should be included on the second part of the two-part TV's Best 2005 special, which will premiere on Monday, December 12th and be repeated throughout the week. Check local listings for the exact times.

The picture I've used is very similar, but not identical to the image used in the magazine; hopefully this one is slightly more unusual.

Thanks go out to Jess for the information.

Help Me Improve TomWelling.org

Tue December 6th 2005 @ 7:35PM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments

I'm currently working on a complete rewrite and restructuring of the code behind TomWelling.org, and I'm reaching the point where I need to start adding some real functionality and features. With that in mind, I'd like to ask frequent (and not so frequent) visitors who read this to give me their input.

I'd like to know what you consider to be the best and worst parts of the site in its current form, and what you would like to see in the next version; I'm already planning on a gallery-of-sorts, a completely new site design, and an improved commenting system for the news pages. Please leave your comments here - all comments will remain private and will not be published.

Bid to Help the Kids!

Tue December 6th 2005 @ 6:58PM - James - Tom Welling - 1 Comment

Hey, that rhymes. I'm currently attempting to nurse a bad back, and sitting at a computer definitely doesn't help so I'll probably be much, much slower at posting news than usual while I'm healing up; but with that said ...

The children's charity Variety is currently running an auction on eBay in which you stand a chance to win two tickets to the upcoming premiere of Tom's latest movie, Cheaper By The Dozen 2. While it's still unconfirmed whether or not Tom will be be attending, I think it's pretty safe to say that he will be there. And if he's not, I'm sure I can survive being wrong.

As I reported way back in October, the Cheaper By The Dozen 2 premiere takes place on Tuesday, December 13th, at Mann's Village Theatre in Westwood, California. The screening begins at 7.30pm, so I imagine arrivals will take place from around 5:00pm onwards. If anyone is planning to camp out outside the theatre and watch the arrivals, I would love to hear your stories or see your photos afterwards - that's assuming Tom turns up, obviously! Please contact me if you think you can help with that.

Now I'd better rest my back again.

Final "Blue Jeans For Genes" Total

Bidding has just ended on the Diesel jeans that Tom donated to the National Hemophilia Foundation's 2005 "Blue Jeans For Genes" auction, and the final total was an impressive $1,851! It looks like Tom has done it again, and of course his fans deserve a big round of applause as well.

For Smallville fans who would like something potentially more affordable, Michael Rosenbaum's autographed Lex Luthor shirt still has about 16 hours left in which to place a bid.

A Small Weekend 'Aqua' Image

Sat December 3rd 2005 @ 9:23PM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments

I know that I already posted this image from 'Aqua' a few days ago, but it's such a great shot (and I'm not feeling my usual, curmudgeonly self) that I thought it would be nice to share a very slightly larger copy of it.

I have a suspicion that I go a little crazy on weekends.

Cheaper By The Dozen 2 International Trailer

Sat December 3rd 2005 @ 8:06PM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments

A couple of days ago I posted a link to the United Kingdom's official website for Cheaper By The Dozen 2, which included a brand new, extended international trailer for the movie. Unfortunately the trailer is embedded into a flash file, and some visitors seem to have had trouble viewing it; because of that, I've converted the trailer into a MOV file that you can download here.

I may as well add that I've also just uploaded screen captures from Smallville's season one episodes 'Rogue', 'Shimmer', 'Hug' and 'Leech'. That makes 10,000 images and counting.

The 411 Sees Triple Digits

Sat December 3rd 2005 @ 2:50PM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments

TV Guide Channel's The 411 has once again gone behind-the-scenes of Smallville in this weekend's edition, which celebrates TV milestones. Smallville's milestone, unsurprisingly, is its fast-approaching 100th episode, which is tentatively scheduled to air in early February, 2006.

Disappointingly, the segment is nothing other than recycled footage from TV Guide Channel's previous TV Families special, so it doesn't look like there's any point in posting a video clip of it.

Still, the show will be repeated a few times on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday; check local listings for the exact times.

Tom Talks Smallville & Cheaper 2

Sat December 3rd 2005 @ 1:49AM - James - Tom Welling - 3 Comments

In a slight case of things that make you go "hmmm", Zap2it has a new interview with Tom in which he speaks, among other things, about his chance to direct an episode of Smallville later this season, and his experiences working alongside Eugene Levy on Cheaper By The Dozen 2. The "hmmm" comes from the article's date: Thursday, December 8th. Me wonders if the article's early release may have been a slight faux pas? Ah well, it's too late now.

An interesting comment – at least from where I'm sitting uncomfortably – came on the subject of those notorious blue tights:

"No. I don't mean to rain on anybody's parade, but I know for a fact that it won't happen. So I'm not worried. But Al did say that Bruce Wayne was coming on the show, and he didn't show up."

And earlier this year Al mentioned that we would be seeing Superman at the very end of the series. So either he's lying to Tom, lying to interviewers, or simply making things up as he goes along. Or perhaps Tom's lying. I'm typing "hmmm" a lot ... this subject will never fail to be fascinating. If only I had a time machine.

As Interesting as that comment was, it wasn't my favourite quote from the article by a long shot. That honour falls to Tom's self-deprecating response to being asked about his directorial debut:

"I've, at least, fooled people into thinking I've learned enough to do that. I had expressed interest, but it wasn't anything I demanded - they invited me. To be invited was probably the best sign of support that they could give me."

And I, for one, place my vote for Clark appearing on the show wearing a sports jacket. Just sayin'.

Teen People Thinks Tom's Beautiful

Sat December 3rd 2005 @ 12:22AM - James - Tom Welling - 2 Comments

Following a recent online poll of TeenPeople.com readers, the site has published its list of the "10 Most Beautiful Guys". Unfortunately the full online listing is only available to AOL subscribers and Teen People magazine readers, which is a little disappointing. As I'm neither of those things, I had to rope in my friend 'Rene to help out and check the full list for me; just as expected Tom was on there - though only at number eight!

Here's what Teen People reader Nicole Lee had to say about Tom:

"He has everything a girl could want in a guy: rugged good looks, eyes as blue as the ocean and a great body. He's perfect to play Superman."

I'm tempted to complain about sexism. And point out that Tom's eyes are not blue without some form of assistance! He may have been a complete pain in the posterior, however Rolling Stone's Erik Hedegaard did do quite a good job when he described them as, and I quote: "green-grape eyes." At any rate, I've posted the picture of Tom that Teen People chose over all the others at their disposal. I adore crushed velvet.

TV Week Scans

Fri December 2nd 2005 @ 3:51AM - James - Tom Welling - 4 Comments

With big thanks to Erica, here are scans of the two-page article about Smallville from the current issue of Australia's TV Week magazine.

On the subject of identifying with his character, Tom had this to say:

"I don't have any superpowers that I can talk about - I have to keep them secret as well, so we have that in common. But yeah, I identify with Clark in that he's dealing with issues that we can all relate to, trying to get the attention of the person he loves, trying to have a close relationship with his parents. And I think that's one of the reasons the show is as successful as it is."

So as expected, there's nothing really new there. Still, it's nice to revisit some of the older comments every now and then - though a certain irony is not lost on me. An Australian magazine is publishing Tom's comments about Smallville's success, when the show was previously pulled from Aussie TV due to (among other things) poor ratings. It was the network's fault for giving it a graveyard slot, but still. Irony.

For the sake of Erica and the rest of this site's Australian visitors, I really hope that Smallville is kept on the air this time!

Jeans For Genes Update

Thu December 1st 2005 @ 8:19PM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments

This year's Blue Jeans For Genes auction was originally scheduled to end on November 29th, but due to a problem with the original listing a few of the earlier items – including Tom's Diesel jeans directly from the set of Smallville – had to be restarted. Now, with two days still left on the auction, Tom is streaking ahead of the other donors with a current high bid of $1725!

That's already $100 dollars more than Tom's donation raised last year, which is fantastic news.

Tom is the "Man of November"

Thu December 1st 2005 @ 5:15PM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments

Over on the Spanish-language website Wapos de Cine (Hot/Handsome Men of Cinema, I think. I was never any good at Spanish. Or English for that matter.) Tom has been voted as the "Wapo de Noviembre '05" ("Man of November '05"). This is the third time that Tom has been voted into first place by the site's visitors, having previously won in October 2004 and April 2005.

Tom's prize? His mug will grace the website's banner until January 1st, 2006. Our prize? His mug will grace the website's banner until January 1st, 2006.

Full UK Cheaper By The Dozen 2 Site

Thu December 1st 2005 @ 4:00PM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments

The full UK website for Cheaper By The Dozen 2 is now available; the movie is released in the United Kingdom on December 26th, 2005.

The new site features a great international trailer that contains a number of new scenes from the movie, as well as a synopsis, production notes, cast and crew profiles, a photo album (there are no new photos of Tom in the photo album, unfortunately), wallpapers, AIM icons, and last but by no means least, links to view a few movie clips - although those appear to be inactive at the moment.

According to the production notes:

"Romance is in the air for Tom Welling's Charlie Baker, who finds his neighbor Anne Murtaugh (Jaime King) more than a summer diversion. 'But she's a Murtaugh,' says Welling, 'and with that name comes all sorts of complications for a Baker.'"

I'm hearing the cascading vocals of John Paul Young ...

My favourite part of the site is the wallpaper featuring the Bakers' and Murtaughs' in a tug-of-war - though that may have a little something to do with it appearing to be the only new picture of Tom on the entire site!

Tom and Kristin in Australia's TV Week

Thu December 1st 2005 @ 2:59PM - James - Tom Welling - 4 Comments

With Smallville just starting back up on Australian television after a painfully long break, TV Week magazine caught up with Tom and Kristin for a short interview in this week's edition of the magazine. From the little that I've been able to find out it appears that the interviews are nothing especially new, but if any Aussies can pass along scans or info about the article I'd really appreciate it.

I'm pretty sure there must be one or two Australians reading ... right? You'll have my undying gratitude until the day I die. Which makes no real sense.

A Few 'Aqua' Stills

Thu December 1st 2005 @ 12:16AM - James - Tom Welling - 3 Comments

It's been a while since the episode aired, yet the WB are still releasing stills from Smallville's highest-rated show of this season, 'Aqua'. In one of them Tom's wearing sandals again, which never fails to make me say "Awwww!" And then slap myself. Truthfully, I'm feeling a little like the people on the Ferrero Rocher advertisements: Warner Bros, with these images "you are really spoiling us." Of course I loathe myself for quoting irritating European ads ...

And now I'm craving dainty hazelnut chocolates with pretentious golden wrappers.
