Smallville Season 4 DVD Cover Art
Tue May 31st 2005 @ 11:50PM - James - Tom Welling - 2 Comments
Once again TVShowsOnDVD.com has beaten other sites to the punch with a first look at the DVD cover art for Smallville's fourth season boxed set; you can view that image – featuring Tom Welling and Erica Durance, AKA Clark and Lois – right here.
Not for the first time I'm of the unfortunate opinion that Warner Bros. needs to get a new graphic design team. The covers for the first two seasons were far more crisply designed and far less cluttered, although that may have a little something to do with Tom being spread-eagled over them all by himself, without any company from his castmates ...
Just like on the Season 3 set, Tom's name appears to be conspicuously absent from most of the extras, and I can only hope that the situation changes for the better between now and the DVD's release in September. Come on, Tom, please don't disappoint me again. All right, pretty please? I'm even asking nicely.
Thanks go out to Katie for passing along the news!
Tom Chats to Hollywood North Report
Mon May 30th 2005 @ 9:46PM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments
Sorry, sorry, I'm a little behind (Only a few hours, but that's still more than I'd like!) with the news. On the set of The Fog, Robert Falconer recently sat down with Tom to conduct an interview for Hollywood North Report, and it's a pretty interesting read.
Tom chats about why he started acting, how he landed the role in Smallville, and the fact that he doesn't have enough time to work out properly during his jam-packed schedule; not that the lack of workout-time seems to do him any real harm in my opinion! Head over to read the article.
HNR will have more information from the set of The Fog in the next few weeks, so keep an eye out for that.
And hey, if you'd like to take a bit of pressure off these achy shoulders (and legs) of mine – I should be so lucky – please send me an email if you notice anything that you think I should report on the site. I'll probably be a bit slow with the news and information over the next month or two, what with it being summer and all, but I'll still do my best to be as prompt as I can be. I've realised that I do apparently have some kind of life outside the internet ...
More Smallville Promo Images
Sun May 29th 2005 @ 12:33AM - James - Tom Welling - 10 Comments
It's been about six months since I last posted a batch of small promotional images from Smallville's fourth season, and at the time I promised that I'd try to get some more ... it took a while, but I've finally managed to. Yes, they're small. Yes, they're tagged. On the former I don't have them much bigger, unfortunately, and on the latter it's a case of a few bad apples spoiling the bunch - I can only apologise for it so many times, quite obviously, but I am sorry about it.
And once again, just like last time, if you like them please leave a comment to let me know! After all, how can I know to look for more if I don't know that people are enjoying them? Although I enjoy them myself, so I'd probably end up looking for more anyway.
I'd appreciate it if you don't repost these, but feel free to link back to TomWelling.org so that others can see them; and if you choose to use them in fan art why not pass that along to me so that I can post it up in the art gallery?
Tom in May Issue of Lime
Sat May 28th 2005 @ 11:41AM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments
Lime magazine's May issue features a bevy of article's about the new breed of "pretty boy" in Hollywood, and one of the notables on the list is a man that we should all know fairly well by now: Tom Welling.
Not that I exactly disagree with that, however further on in the article Lime also said that "You might even mistake them for girls from the head up." I might need to have a word with their optician ... For the full story head over to the magazine's official website, where you'll also find details about where to buy it. But hurry up, because May will soon be over!"Just what do Hayden Christensen, Tom Welling and Jesse Metcalfe have in common? They’re all pretty boys. You know the type: big glassy eyes, moist kissable lips and perfect hair."
Thanks to Lisa for the information.
Video of Tom's Message to Brandon
Thu May 26th 2005 @ 7:26PM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments
Justin over at BlueTights.net has just uploaded a video of the E! News Live segment that aired a few weeks ago; the segment about Superman Returns featured a very brief message from Tom – on the set of The Fog – to the new Superman, Brandon Routh:
As Tom well knows, it's a huge project. The full two-minute segment is available in both WMV and MOV format over at The Planet, however I have a small excerpt of Tom's five-second message in MOV format - as always you'll need Quicktime Player to watch it."I wish him all the best. I know it's a very big project, probably one of the biggest that's ever been made."
Thanks go out to Serene, Justin for capturing the clip, and Ficassidy for providing the source tape.
No Fakin' Here

She's an interesting one is that Selma Blair. In a recent article on BackStage.com about on-screen chemistry and faux sexcapades, Selma mentioned a scene in The Fog where Tom's character, Nick, tries it on and she is forced to brush him off. Selma had a slight problem with that, however; and the problem was Tom's face:
And who says that actors are always professional, huh? Certainly not I. That little snippet is near the bottom of the article, and Tom isn't mentioned anywhere else so you may or may not wish to read the whole thing. But just in case you do, here's the link."Right now I'm shooting The Fog with Tom Welling, and we have a scene where my character brushes him off in a friendly way, but I couldn't play it with confidence because I was so enamored with his beautiful face."
Is Tom this Year's Teen Choice?
Thu May 26th 2005 @ 1:17PM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments
Another year, another nomination - Tom's fourth year as a nominee at the Teen Choice Awards. In his first year as a nominee Tom walked away with an award, but since then he hasn't been quite so lucky. Hopefully, after two years of disappointment, it will be third time lucky and the cycle will be broken.
As usual Tom is up for an award in the category of "Choice TV Actor: Drama/Action Adventure" for his work on Smallville, however he's noticeably lacking from the "Choice Male Hottie" category - are these people blind? On second thought, don't answer that ...
Surprisingly, Kristin Kreuk doesn't appear to be nominated for anything this year, however Allison Mack is one of those with the potential to be named "Choice TV Sidekick" when the awards show airs on Tuesday, August 16th at 8:00pm EST, on Fox.
I'm sure we all wish the best of luck to Tom and Allison, so please don't forget to go vote for them.
Audition at 30,000 feet
Tue May 17th 2005 @ 8:42PM - James - Tom Welling - 3 Comments
In a recent edition of the Vancouver Province, there was a news story about how Tom came to audition for his role in The Fog; and it all started on a plane journey.
During a flight from Vancouver to L.A. earlier this year, Tom and Jamie were seated near to (or in Jamie's case, next to) the movie's producer, David Foster, who happened to be reading The Fog's script during the flight. In a priceless moment, Jamie was bemused as he repeatedly looked up from the pages of his script to stare at her husband - apparently David had, although Tom didn't yet know it, found his Nick Castle.
Introductions were made, agreements were reached, et voila, David had the star for his movie.
Of course, just in case something was lost in my retelling (as it inevitably was), I should probably add that you can find a small scan of the article to your left; it was the best I could find, so please forgive the small text. And I'll just be sat over here, chuckling at the reporter's description of Tom as "lanky ..."
Thanks to Dee for giving me a heads-up about the article!
Details About The Fog Graphic Novel
Tue May 17th 2005 @ 3:54PM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments
As previously reported, a graphic novel "prequel" to Tom's new movie, The Fog, will be released sometime in late September or early October to tie-in with the movie's release. The novel will be published by Dark Horse Comics, and features an all-new, original story by Scott Allie in conjunction with the movie's director, Rupert Wainwright:
A small copy of the cover, by artist Mike Mignola, can be seen to your left, however a larger copy is available here - the interior art will be by Todd Herman, Andy Owens, and Dave Stewart."A group of Shanghai traders have come to America hoping to escape a string of weird deaths at the teeth and claws of unseen monsters. The arrival of a strange yet familiar fog reveals that the curse has found them ..."
Video From The Fog Press Conference
Tue May 17th 2005 @ 11:41AM - James - Tom Welling - 2 Comments
About.com has up the first, short video clip from The Fog's recent press conference; in it we get to see the now immortal moment when Selma Blair threw her false breast at Rupert Wainwright, leaving Tom with his head in his hands, seemingly embarrassed by her bravado.
Far more exciting than the breast-throwing, at least for Tom's fans, is a first look at his appearance in the movie! Tan trousers, possibly chinos; a white casual shirt; long sideburns; hair gelled with a side parting. All in all, a very good look on Tom despite the pretty poor quality of the video.
I think I'm forgetting something ... oh right, the link to the video. The video is on the right side of the page, and you'll need Real Player to view it.
Cheaper By The ... How Many?
Sat May 14th 2005 @ 12:30PM - James - Tom Welling - 1 Comment
With the recent news that Hilary Duff will be rejoining the Baker clan for Cheaper By The Dozen 2, it may be only a matter of time before the announcement comes out about yet another re-addition to the cast - our very own Tom Welling. The movie, currently set to shoot in Toronto from June 13th to September 2nd, will likely feature most – if not all – of the original cast, however brief their appearances may be.
At this point I can't absolutely confirm Tom's participation, but I can say that the odds seem fairly good right now; of course, please don't verbally flay me if I'm wrong! I'm fragile enough as it is ...
Tom will have a roughly month-long window between the start of shooting on Cheaper and the start of filming on Smallville's fifth season, so his fans may yet get lucky and find themselves awaiting the release of two movies over the next 6-12 months. If Tom is going to be in the movie you should probably expect an official press release to come fairly soon.
Best Wishes for Brandon
Sat May 14th 2005 @ 12:11PM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments
On last night's edition of E! News Live, during a report on the movie Superman Returns, Tom was shown giving a brief message of support to Superman-in-training Brandon Routh; don't let anyone tell you that Tom isn't a gentleman - and a diplomat. Unfortunately I don't have a video clip of it, and as far as I know the show won't be repeated. I was hoping that the segment may be repeated on E! News Weekend, but that wasn't the case, more's the pity.
Of course if anyone did manage to get a video clip of Tom's five-second spot on Friday, please let me know!
Full Text from The Fog Press Conference
Thu May 12th 2005 @ 5:51AM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments
Staci Wilson, the feature writer for About.com's Horror Books and Movies section, has just finished her transcription of the press conference that took place last week for The Fog; a link to her account on About.com can be found here, on the movie's index page, however the interviews on that site are unfortunately truncated.
But not to worry, because Staci has uploaded the transcript, in its entirety (and in two parts), to Horror.com.
Tom also had a moment it which he extolled the correct pronunciation of "Hor-or," although that also seemingly came from a rather lateral tangent ...
Before I go (I actually think I need a break, my head is swimming just trying to keep up with Tom's witty retorts these days!) I'd like to thank Dee for letting me know about the About.com article and so many others - I always seem to have news already by the time she sends it to me, so this time I want to say a big thank you!
Tom and ... Jane Fonda?
Thu May 12th 2005 @ 4:51AM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments
Oi, that's a couple and a half. But don't worry, this is just one of Ted Casablanca's amusing old chestnut's. In the newest installment of The Awful Truth over at E! Online, Ted discusses one of his favourite little pet subjects: Older women dating younger men; think Demi and Ashton. Or better yet, try not to. Not that I really think they make a cute couple or anything ...
Asking around his showbiz acquaintances for suggestions, Ted was given a doozy of a pairing by Robert Luketic, the director of Monster-In-Law: "I think that little Superboy kid – Tom Welling – would make a great accessory to Jane."
Little? Superboy? Kid? Ouch, I think my head hurts. Of course I suspect the thirty-nine year age gap is the least of their worries - Ted did remember Tom's married already, I hope.
You'll find that cute little snippet, along with a small picture of Tom and Jane (I nearly typed Tarzan and Jane, by the way), if you scroll to the bottom of this page.
Tom Has a Fan in Selma
Wed May 11th 2005 @ 5:47AM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments
This press conference is going to be keeping me busy for weeks at this rate ... In yet more news from The Fog's press conference (I feel like I don't have anything besides that to write about at the moment - Tom, start giving me something else to talk about!), once again over at Sci Fi Wire, it seems that Tom and Maggie Grace have a fan in their co-star Selma Blair. When asked why she decided to take the role of Stevie Wayne, Selma replied that it was primarily because she's a fan of director Rupert Wainwright - "And Tom. I'm a fan of Tom's. And now Maggie. Wow, making friends." After that she laughed, before asking: "What's wrong? Are these not the right answers?"
Yes, Selma, me thinks those are definitely the right answers.
As always here's the link to the full article, and if anyone has any news about Tom that isn't related to this press conference – or, if you must, news that is related to the press conference – please contact me; I think my head will explode if I have to type the words "press" and "conference" again in the near future! I am of course kidding. Kinda.
And The Fog Rolls On
Tue May 10th 2005 @ 5:04AM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments
Wow, there's a lot of news right now about The Fog's set visit and press conference that took place last week - now JoBlo.com is in on it too! Not that there's anything particularly new or interesting to glean from their write-up of the event, however it never hurts to have yet another source for news.
In fact JoBlo's feature writer seemed more interested in describing the grilled salmon he ate for lunch, and (in some detail) the moment when Selma Blair tossed one of her falsies at director Rupert Wainwright; please don't ask me to make sense of any of it, I'm just reporting this second-hand!
I'm not sure if there are any new snippets of information in this article, and there's definitely nothing new about Tom, but it's still a worthwhile read for those interested in the movie.
Edgier Fog This Time Around
Mon May 9th 2005 @ 5:32PM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments
Sci Fi Wire was also on hand at last week's press conference for The Fog, and although they don't have much new information about what was said at the event, there are some interesting tidbits in an article from today's edition.
According to Tom, the new film is "Quicker. It's a little bit edgier, I think." And when asked about the Fog itself – made using a fog machine and CGI – Tom related a scene that he had recently shot involving him inside a truck, gradually becoming surrounded by the Fog:
I wonder if Tom busted up laughing when that happened - the chances are probably pretty good!"You're on set, and this fog's coming at you, and it's creepy. Literally the first time I saw this I was like, 'They've got some well-trained fog,' because this thing came around the house, came at us, and then all of a sudden I heard this thump and these three guys stood up with these lights on their chest and fog machines. They're inside the fog so they can't see. So they're just taking their steps, and they ran right into the truck."
And why not provide the link so that you can all read the article for yourself?
The Fog's Cast "Divided by Two"
Fri May 6th 2005 @ 5:31PM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments
With that almost nonsensical title, I segue into the news ... At a press conference held earlier this week the cast of The Fog were on hand to speak to reporters and give a few soundbites. One of those reporters was Heather Newgen, for Coming Soon! In a new article at the website, a few of the cast's antics were revealed - including Tom's joking response to a question about the remake: "The [original] was great for what it was, but obviously as you can see us all sitting here, we've taken the ages of the original cast and divided them by two!"
Throughout the conference Tom was apparently unable to contain his laughter, particularly when co-star Selma Blair pointed to herself after Tom was asked what drew him to the role. I wonder how much effort it took to get a respite from Tom's impishness ...
Tom Loses Out at Saturn Awards
Wed May 4th 2005 @ 4:20PM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments
The 31st Annual Saturn Awards were held last night in Los Angeles, and unfortunately, just like in the previous three years, Tom walked away (figuratively speaking, given that he wasn't at the ceremony) empty-handed. Ben Browder won the award for "Best Actor in a Television Series" for his performance in Farscape: Peacekeeper Wars.
As expected, Smallville lost out in the "Best Network Television Series" category to Lost, which picked up a number of awards for its cast and crew. Michael Rosenbaum failed to pick up a second "Best Supporting Actor in a Television Series" award for his portrayal of Lex Luthor, falling victim to the very popular Terry O'Quinn from Lost. Likewise Erica Durance was unsuccessful in the "Best Supporting Actress in a Television Series" category, which was won by Amanda Tapping for Stargate SG-1.
However, in happier news, Smallville Seasons 2 and 3 destroyed the competition to win the award for "Best DVD Television Release".
The full list of winners can be read at the Saturn Awards official website.
On The Set of The Fog
Wed May 4th 2005 @ 2:10PM - James - Tom Welling - 2 Comments
Devin Faraci, from CHUD.com, was lucky enough to visit the set of The Fog yesterday, where he saw the filming of some of the movie's final, pivotal scenes. I won't spoil you for which scenes those were, however they were important ones!
Devin apparently conducted interviews with the cast that will be transcribed later in the week, however he had this to say about Tom:
(Tom does the jumping up and down, "psyching himself up" thing a lot, I have to say.)"When we come on to set the first take is being set up. Tom Welling, tall and handsome and every inch a superboy (almost a superman - he has a good growth of stubble on his face), is being playful, showing the other cast members the best way to do acrobatic tricks with his flashlight. As the director calls everyone to their marks, Welling goes to the door of the town hall and jumps up and down in place three times to psych himself up."
Unfortunately the movie will, seemingly, be PG-13 (All I can say is a big "Oh dear" to that one.) so those hoping for a real, terrifying horror movie may be somewhat disappointed - that will include me. In addition to that, there will apparently be a "prequel" comic book released in September or early October, a few weeks before the movie comes out at the cinema.
Currently the set visit is CHUD's main news story on the homepage, but just in case it has disappeared (Like a wisp of fog - terrible joke, I'll stop now.) by the time you read this, here's the link; there are spoilers for the movie in this article, so tread with care if you don't want to know what happens!
Tom Speaks About 'Commencement'
Tue May 3rd 2005 @ 7:01PM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments
In yesterday's Watch With Kristin online chat at E! Online, Kristin mentioned that she had spoken with Tom on the set of his new movie, The Fog. Unfortunately Kristin didn't mention any of Tom's comments about The Fog (I suspect those will come later), however she did reveal that Tom had spoken to her about Smallville's extended fourth season finale, 'Commencement'.
Without revealing any spoilers, the ever-active and sporty Tom had this to say about one of the location shoots:
The full segment includes spoilers about the scenes that were being shot, so you may not wish to read it; however if you would like to be "in the know", the information can be found in Watch With Kristin's chat transcript."We had to hop out of the helicopter about seven or eight feet down ... and stand there. Then a camera on another helicopter would come down and shoot us, and then we'd have to climb back on the helicopter. It was quite adventurous. I enjoyed it quite a bit. I hope we get to go back."
First Episode Still from 'Commencement'
Tue May 3rd 2005 @ 6:43PM - James - Tom Welling - 0 Comments
Over at KryptonSite, Craig has posted the first official episode still from Smallville's fourth season finale, 'Commencement', scheduled to air on May 18th. As the title suggests, this episode focuses on Clark's graduation from high school. (Which is a good thing, because lately my suspension of disbelief on Tom being a high-schooler has been lacking!) As you may have expected, the new image features Clark in his perpetually awful graduation gown and mortar board. It just goes to show that nobody, not even Tom, can make one of those hats look good!
I have a small copy of the image to your right, but if you'd like to see a bigger copy you should head over to KryptonSite's 'Commencement' Gallery.
